Epstein was a super-shady socialite and convicted sex offender, Maxwell was his socialite companion, and had been rumored to procure and groom young girls for Epstein and his friends. It appears there may be a political angle to Maxwell’s arrest. Epstein entertained important people at his parties, including a number of men in Trump’s circle, as well as Trump himself.

Months ago, American intelligence officials concluded that during peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan, a Russian military intelligence group offered to Taliban-linked fighters bounties for killing American troops. They paid up, too, although it is unclear which of the twenty US deaths happened under the deal. But this wasn't breaking news for the National Security Council.
