He was a towering man of science and a humble man of faith, globally acclaimed by his peers and knighted by Queen Elizabeth, felled this week, at age 88, by coronavirus. Sir John Houghton, astrophysicist and perhaps the most honored scientist of his time, insisted to the end that his desire to explore the secrets of the world and universe through math and science was fueled by his faith as an evangelical Christian.
