Talking with Robert Jay Lifton: 9/11, the Climate Crisis and a Society Losing Reality

Robert Jay Lifton has wrestled with some of the most disturbing events of our time, studying how people react to horror and great stress. Trained in psychology and psychiatry, 40 years ago he went to Hiroshima to listen to the survivors of the world’s first nuclear bombing explosion. His book won the National Book Award. He’s also written on the Nazi doctors in Hitler’s Germany, Vietnam veterans, and in Destroying The World To Save It, he studied the extremist religious Japanese cult that released sarin gas on its own people.

The distinguished scholar is now 93. In recent years, he’s turned his attention to our president. He wrote the foreword to The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, the work of 27 psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health experts to assess President Trump’s mental health, and most recently, Bill talked with him about his own book on the Trump era, Losing Reality.
