In 1995, during the run-up to his presidential challenge to Bill Clinton, Bob Dole recalled fondly his days opposing LBJ’s amendments to the Social Security Act. “I was there, fighting the fight, one of the twelve, voting against Medicare because in 1965 we knew it wouldn’t work,” he said.
