When U.S. and Korean forces arrived in Dien Nien hamlet in 1966, some villagers fled, but many stayed to protect their homes. At gunpoint, soldiers gathered them into a large group and — after having them sit terrified in the sun for several hours — began shooting into the crowd. Vi Thi Ngoi was buried beneath the bodies of her neighbors. She survived by pretending to be dead. When the soldiers finally left, she was one of only 2 survivors; a total of 112 civilians were killed in the massacre. |
