Nguyen Thi Lam was working in a rice paddy in the Mekong Delta in 1968 when a helicopter swooped in and began firing on the farmers. Bullets rained down on them, one of them hitting her sister-in-law in the throat killing her instantly. Lam was shot in the leg and blacked out. A U.S. soldier found her and took her to get medical treatment, but she lost the leg.
