Web Extra: Eric Alterman on How Liberals Need to ‘Toughen Up’

April 20, 2012

Bill’s conversation with Eric Alterman continued even after the cameras were turned off — the TV cameras, anyway. But we captured that extended conversation exclusively for BillMoyers.com. In it, the author talks about Paul Ryan, Andrew Cuomo, liberals’ weaknesses, and his dinner with then-Senator Barack Obama.

“The first thing we need to do, as liberals, to become credible to the other 80 percent of Americans who refuse to call themselves liberals, is find a way to make the government protection of their lives credible. And it’s no easy task,” Alterman tells Moyers.

A man is infinitely more complicated than his thoughts.

Eric Alterman thinks that Paul Ryan is right, thereby assuring that this “right and left” unified “critique” of our national ills will COMPLETELY fail to contextualize these outlandish claims. The United States, with the world’s lowest corporate tax rates, the world’s  (geometrically) largest military  , a country in which democratic  management of the economy, much less any influence or regulation, cannot even be conceived of, much less discussed, Eric Alterman leaves the discourse as impoverished as he found it. Mr. Moyers knows that there are plenty of guests he could invite who could explain this in reasonable, easily comprehensible terms.

Alterman nails it, as usual. Thank you, Bill Moyers, for this guest.

Eric Alterman critical view of the Left is very valuable.  We need to wake up and listen.  Sidenote- where in the media do you find 2 right wingers having an honest, sober debate about the weaknesses on their side?  I guess if Shepard Smith were to interview David Brooks that would be the only scenario I can think of.  Bill Moyers is a goldmine of fairness and ready to get dirty in the quest for truth.

Why can’t Bill get stronger guests?
    Any notions?

He nails poor people with his half-fast attitude.

Exceptional analysis. My work looks at healthcare through art. It has taken me to the steps of the Capitol where I talk to many Americans.

I have found that the intention behind the opposition to “ObamaCare” is to sow misinformation and fear for political gain – a great disservice to our nation in such desperate need of honest, substantive debate.

A great portion of public has become a microphone for talk radio hate speech. I’m with Alterman. I call them out on it especially those who oppose the “government takeover” of health insurance then tell me they’re on Medicare.

I exhort them to drop their Medicare coverage, a single-payer system, and get their insurance on the individual market.  Otherwise, what’s to talk about? It’s the height of hypocrisy.

Andrew Cuomo is NOT a liberal icon. He’s a corporate shill.
