Ep. 1: Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth — ‘The Hero’s Adventure’

  • submit to reddit

Bill Moyers and mythologist Joseph Campbell begin their groundbreaking and timeless conversation with an exploration of the classic hero cycle, including consistent and enduring hero patterns in literature, real life and even the Star Wars films. Campbell also encourages the audience to view parts of their own lives as heroic journeys. In a clip from the first episode, Campbell encourages the audience to discover what excites them, and make that the basis for their personal journeys.

Released in 1988, The Power of Myth was one of the most popular TV series in the history of public television, and continues to inspire new audiences.

Thank you for making this interview available. I bought the original pre-dvd and then dvd. However my Mac lap top doesn’t load dvd;s and I have been wanting to watch this again. Both Mr. Campbell and Mr. Moyer are intelligent, knowledgeable men willing to shed light on ‘life and help the rest of us along the path .

Hey there, DJ… How could you have waited for it to [re-appear] for 30 years when the original conversation took place less than 30 years ago? Were you waiting for it before it was manifested? Of course, I do concede it is a possibility… but was just wondering.

The link for Episode 2 seems to actually be a link for Episode 3????

  • http://www.billmoyers.com Theresa Riley

It goes to Episode 2 for me. Not sure which link you are referencing.

  • Nate Whilk

The filename of the downloaded file does end in “ep3.mp3″, not “ep2.mp3″ as you would expect. However, the rest of the filename is correct, and the audio really is for episode 2.

    Dear Feedback,
..Regarding: non-mythical Kim Jong Un’s Nuclear Hiroshima Landmines inside the United States viewed as “myth” by American public from a “comfortable-myth” point of view,
..I’d like to submit the following comment to your websites.
..Like the US currently is applying against Iran, the US should have made efforts to stop N. Korea’s Nuclear programs.
.. “NO MISSILES NEEDED!” Kim Jong Un’s Nuclear Hiroshima Landmines(rated 60 Kilotons. Horoshima was 20KT) are currently concealed inside of & under feet of US & Europe. SEE: U.S. House Hearing 106-158 chaired by U.S. House Rep. Dan Burton. Further testimony by Sen. Lugar.
..Again, to “falsehood journalists”: “NO MISSILES ARE NEEDED for delivery of Kim Jong Un’s Nuclear Hiroshima Landmines, which cannot be detected on radar & cannot be shot down once underground inside backyards of United States, Wash, DC, NY, OH, MI, GA, FL, IL, TX, CA, etc., etc!”
..U.S. proposed “Anti-MIssile Shield” is obsolete like the “Maginot Line” in France before WW2. Wasted money!
..SEE: U.S. House Hearing. 106-158. Kim Jong Un’s Nuclear Hiroshima Landmines are one-man portable, carried as backpack or “suitcase nuke” from a small boat or Kayak at the US coastline to your city.
.. Alleging “missile delivery” of these weapons has been recognized as a “ruse” by top military planners since the “Cold War” when these Nuclear Landmines were being “seeded”by the U.S. & the Soviet Union.
..Kim Jong Un’s Nuclear Hiroshima Landmines are inside the U.S. and inside Europe & this truth is impossible to deny, unless you are mentally disabled or a very good liar.
    Sincerely,
    Ken MacKenzie

Joseph Campbell is truly one of the most unique intellectuals I know. I hope his guidance opens up many people, just as it did for me!

These excerpts provoked me to dig up my 25-year-old audio cassettes and listen to the entire series again. “The Power of Myth” was life-changing for me. Mr. Moyers, given today’s self-aggrandizing, empty-headed interviewers, I marvel at how beautifully you set up Joe to share his wisdom. Masterful work you can be proud of decades later. I am so grateful to you.
