Democratic candidate Joe Biden is trying to get elected, but in such a storm of crazy that his actual policies are simply not getting much airtime. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is pushing through every agenda item it can.

While we are all understandably buffeted by the craziness of politics these days, no historians will ever write about this election without noting that over it hangs the pall of more than 220,000 Americans dead of Covid-19 and more than 8 million infected, and that numbers, once again, are rising.

Over the course of 18 interviews, Trump spoke for nine hours to journalist Bob Woodward. He had apparently been angry at his aides for shielding him from Woodward before the journalist published his book Fury in 2018, thinking he could charm Woodward into presenting him in a better light, as he had shaped coverage of himself in the tabloids in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s. Trump was wrong.

The fifth volume of the Senate Intelligence Report came out on August 18 and, in the storm of other news, has gotten less attention than it should have. According to Republicans—as well as the Democrats on the committee—in 2016, Trump’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, was actively working with a Russian intelligence officer.

In a somber speech, former President Barack Obama warned that, in this election, American democracy is at stake.
