In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which devastated parts of New Jersey, Long Island, and the outer boroughs of New York City, the Occupy Wall Street movement mobilized quickly to provide relief to affected areas. Organizers set up distribution hubs in two Brooklyn churches, where volunteers have sorted donations, cooked meals, and formed committees of medical and construction professionals to help with specific needs of those affected by the storm. The group has come up with innovative methods of soliciting donations from the public – namely, “Occupy Sandy’s Wedding Registry” at Amazon.com, where users can easily see exactly what items are needed and have them sent to the distribution centers. A similar effort on a lesser scale was organized to help victims of Hurricane Isaac in August.
