The Mythology of ‘Star Wars’ with George Lucas
After his epic series of interviews with Joseph Campbell in 1988’s The Power of Myth, Bill Moyers returned to Skywalker Ranch to interview George Lucas, whose Star Wars franchise was heavily influenced by Campbell’s work. In 1999’s The Mythology of Star Wars, George Lucas talks candidly about his craft and inspirations, including the evolution of Darth Maul. Lucas explains how the evil Sith assassin was the result of a multicultural search into what people consider to be the physical appearance of evil. The conversation, which features snippets from the original Star Wars trilogy and Episode One, covers themes including religion and the struggle of good versus evil, and how those concepts manifest in the Star Wars universe.
