Preview: The Top Secret Trade Deal You Need to Know About

A cornerstone of President Obama’s plan to create more American jobs is a new agreement called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), referred to by some as “NAFTA on steroids.”  While negotiations are being carried out in secret and very little about the terms has been leaked, enough is known to worry about its possible effect on trade unions and our copyright and patent laws, not to mention environmental, health and safety regulations.

This week on Moyers & Company, Bill discusses the TPP with two perceptive observers of the global economy. Yves Smith is an expert on investment banking who runs the Naked Capitalism blog, a go-to site for information and insight on the business and ethics of finance. Dean Baker is co-director of the progressive Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, D.C.

Also on this week’s broadcast, a preview of  Robert Greenwald’s new documentary, Unmanned: America’s Drone Wars.  It’s release coincided with a first: victims of deadly drone attacks testified at a special briefing for members of Congress. In this week’s show we feature clips from the film, which shares testimony, stories and alarming news on the fatal impact of our drone strategy.

And a Bill Moyers’ essay on Obamacare’s rocky rollout.

This show couldn’t be more timely. The TPP is a horror, and so is the TIPPT which involves the European Union. Goodbye to national sovereignty all around!

  • Progressive Patriot

Couldn’t agree more. To Arms! To Arms!

  • Jim Parker

ALEC on Steroids is a more accurate description of the TPP. Decades in the making behind closed doors open only to 600 trans national corporations, only 5 of the 29 chapters address trade. The rest focus on reductions in corporate risk even the Citizen’s United compromised legislative branch do not have the courage to promote. Fast Track (TPA) is the only way it could ever pass the smell test. And, virtually no one seems to be alarmed about it.

  • David Karlsson

I suppose it was too much to ask to have someone on the show who was an actual trade expert, and not just activists opposed to the TPP. We sure wouldn’t want a debate or anything that might lead to a balanced discussion.

  • David Karlsson

Well, we certainly wouldn’t want to have anyone on the show who might be able to discuss it. Moyers will make sure you only get one side of the story.

If the best you can say about this show is that it’s freely available, that should tell you something.

  • Steve Hendricks

Moyers has a long & celebrated track record of objectively bringing to light loads of important issues, distilling key points that most media organizations don’t take the time to investigate.

Who do you think is missing from the panel, and would best represent the “other side” of the story?

  • Jopin Klobe

Yes, one must pay for information that has an effect on the general welfare. Only the crap that the “rich” pay for is trustworthy.

  • Liberals4RealFreedom

I agree with you but the bottom line is that there is too much secrecy in this negotiation unlike ever seen before. Big corporations are spending billion of dollars to keep it out of the public eyes in order to make the decisions for themselves without being adhere to the regulations. You may call it a prototype of New World Order, under complete control of the oligarchy (fascism) corporations.

  • Liberals4RealFreedom

Its like a stepping stone to the New World Order, a world under complete control of the corporations who wants to be treated as the kings and queens of this world.

  • Liberals4RealFreedom

I hate the thought about buying the guns but TPP have erased the doubt on this one. I don’t trust TPP’s motive due to their disregard of environmental concerns.

  • Progressive Patriot

Yeah! I probably should have written something like, “Sound the Alarm!” I get your point. I REALLY don’t want to see “Free Trade,” agreement foisted upon us in the dark of the night. This will only grease the skids on the race to the bottom for the 99%.

    Thanks for the good feedback!

  • David Karlsson

Objective? Inviting only people who already agree with his views is hardly objective. Why not invite a former trade negotiator or someone from a think tank that actually understands what’s in a trade agreement? This isn’t rocket science here. All Moyers wants to do is confirm his previously held beliefs.

  • David Karlsson

No, big corporations are not spending billions to keep this secret. You just made that up. All trade negotiations by all countries in the world are done like this.

  • Steve Hendricks

His belief in informing the public what our government is doing in secret on our behalf? I share that belief. Trade negotiators on behalf of think-tanks are already at the table, IN SECRET- it’s the people’s voice that’s missing from the discussion.

Did you read it? I said former trade negotiator. They’re not at the table. Think tanks aren’t at the table. They’re experts on trade policy, but you seem to think that talking to an actual expert would be a horrible thing to do.
