|Montana: Opting out|
The Supreme Court’s ruling on the ACA came down while Montana was in the midst of an election to replace term-limited Governor Brian Schweitzer, who supported the expansion. On Nov. 6, Democrat Steve Bullock, the state’s former attorney general, beat Republican Rick Hill, a former congressman, and on Jan. 4 Bullock submitted his revision of Schweitzer’s state budget, which included the proposed expansion of Medicaid. But a vote to bring the budget measure to the floor failed by a single vote — with one Democrat later admitting he had accidentally voted the wrong way. And with the legislative session over, the expansion is effectively dead.
