Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, a Republican, announced in July that he would opt out of the Medicaid expansion. “ [I]t is clear we cannot afford this enormous burden,” Bryant wrote in a statement. Bryant was unconvinced that the expansion would be fully covered by the federal government, as the law states. “Since when did the federal government ever give free money without asking for something in return? After all, some people tend to forget the so-called ‘free’ money is actually your money,” Bryant wrote.
