Alaska: Opting out
21.4% uninsured

Alaska Governor Sean Parnell, a Republican, has been clear about his stance on the Medicaid expansion: He told the Anchorage Daily News that he thought the federal government’s plan to initially cover the full cost of the expansion was a “myth.” In a statement posted to the Republican Governors Association website, Parnell said, “I remain concerned about the impacts of the federal law on individual and state’s rights, and with the real life effects of these tax increases on our people and our economy. We will do everything we can in Alaska to limit the impact of Congress’ decision to pass this tax increase to Alaskans.” His decision to not ask the state legislature for funding for the expansion, and the legislature’s decision not to compel him to do so, means Alaska will be opting out.
