Ep. 2: Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth — ‘The Message of the Myth’

In the second episode of The Power of Myth, Bill Moyers and mythologist Joseph Campbell compare creation myths from the Bible and elsewhere, and talk about how religions and mythologies need to change with time in order to maintain their relevance in peoples’ lives. In this clip, Campbell explains why myths appeal to people across all cultures.

Once a myth “catches you,” Campbell says, you develop such a longing “for one or another of these traditions of information of a deep, rich, life-vivifying sort, that you won’t want to give it up.”

Released in 1988, The Power of Myth was one of the most popular TV series in the history of public television, and continues to inspire new audiences.

imagine. this came out in the “i, me, mine” decade and despite the onset of unrestrained avarice, it captured the largest audience pbs ever had. as a specie, we need to resurrect and give life to the depth of our understanding about life even more than our empirical study of it under scopes big and small… a,c,t, and guanine are great but the spiritual aspect of our being is what guides our use of our knowledge… without wisdom, the rest are just facts listed as on a torn piece of paper for shopping.
