Sister Simone Responds to “47 Percent” Comment

ThinkProgress caught up with recent Moyers & Company guest Sister Simone Campbell earlier this week and asked her what she thought about Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” video. Sister Simone’s Nuns on the Bus tour brought attention to the impact that vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s budget plan would have on the nation’s poor. She told ThinkProgress that Romney’s comments showed that he is “out of touch” and “has no idea how hard it is at the margins of our society.”

i’m a senior who just happens to be disabled and i’m definitely on the margin of society. I pay rent, utilities, car payment, insurance, and i still try to eat on approximately $900 per month! At every turn, prices go up! Trying to better myself in my late 40′s i took out student loans and now i can’t work at anything anyway, but student loans has taken 15% of my social security back to repay what i cannot use. It pays the schools to push the loans (and they do!) but it puts lots of people on the edge of society who cannot get hired even with a better education. I live in a poor community and were it not for family and friends, i would not eat and i know literally 30 or more people in the same situation.

It’s not the lack of knowing that bothers me so much, although that’s bad enough. It’s the complete lack of caring about 47% of the country that proves he is unfit for the presidency or any other office.

Sister Simone understands that people who live in poverty are not looking for a hand out they are looking for a hand to help them out of poverty. This is something that Romney and Ryan will never understand because they lack real world experience, compassion and common sense.

While Romney sits and eats h is $1000pllus a meal at his fu nd raisers, drinking and smiling. There are plenty of people who have tried to g et to a place where they can better themselves. The Mother working min wage jobs with a couple of kids at home who uses food stamps to get by. The father who has applied for work but can only get part time jobs at minimal wage and no benefits. Working below the 40 hours a week so No vacation no Medical coverage no sick days.

Smile Mr Romney take your wife and move in a low rent place live on $1,000 a month for 6 months and then come and let us know how lazy you are. How worthless you are because you are not employed full time. Or that you are a much because you have to rely upon food stamps to help feed your kids.

Mr Romney get in touch with life and what is out there before you ridicule someone else and the way they have to live.

47% + 30% = Romney ‘s gap with the public. Poverty is not what international organizations and America think. Miseries should be the target before erasing poverty Thanks Sister and Bill Moyers.

While some will refer to Romney’s $1,000.00 per plate at fund raisers, are they ignoring Obama’s $30,0000.00/plate fund raisers. We have spent $4,000.00 more this year on food & gas than last year & our (two of us) budget is continually getting stretched. I would sooner have a successful business man in the whitehouse who is interested in the individual success of every American than a community orgainizer who is for redistributing the wealth. Remember the government can not give anybody anything that it doesn’t take from someone else…Americans have been proven to be the most generous people in the world, United We Stand, divided we will fall!!
